Smooth, prime, and blend

Fill the hole slightly proud of the surface, let it dry fully, then sand it flush and smooth so your hand cannot feel the join. Skipping the sanding is the most common reason a patch shows through later. Wipe away the dust before you paint.

Prime the patched area first so it does not soak up paint differently from the wall around it, which is what causes a dull, visible spot. Then paint a little wider than the repair to blend the edges, and use paint from the same tin as the wall if you possibly can. Done patiently, the fix disappears.
